Teaching Philosophy
I believe that piano education is fundamentally similar to learning a language. Just as language fluency develops through understanding vocabulary, structure, and expression, musical fluency is built by learning notes, rhythm, musical symbols, and theory—strengthened through regular practice and performance. This process promotes not only technical growth but also the integration of cognitive, emotional, and creative development.
A comprehensive piano education enhances fine motor skills and supports the balanced development of both brain hemispheres, encouraging both logical thinking and imaginative expression. It fosters self-confidence, emotional awareness, and the ability to communicate through music—qualities that benefit students in all areas of life. My goal is to help students develop not only as pianists, but as independent, expressive individuals who form a lifelong relationship with music.
Lesson Approach
Every student is unique. I tailor my teaching to their age, personality, and learning style—whether they respond best to visual cues, auditory input, movement, or verbal explanation. Before setting a long-term plan, I observe each student’s learning behaviors, motivation, and concentration in the first few lessons and adjust lesson goals accordingly. Lessons may include pre-music activities, improvisation, or drawing when appropriate, to help students connect with music in meaningful and intuitive ways.
I emphasize steady, thoughtful progress over speed. Repertoire is chosen both for technical growth and for musical enjoyment. When a student struggles or loses motivation, I shift materials or approaches to re-engage their interest. While I provide guidance and structure, I also encourage students to reflect, make decisions, and take ownership of their learning. Through this process, students gain the skills and confidence to engage with music independently and joyfully—even long after formal lessons have ended.
